A savings goal without a monthly number attached is a wish. This turns the target and the deadline into the one figure that decides whether the plan survives contact with a normal month.

Save per month
$416.67
- Total you will contribute
- $10,000
- Shortfall to cover
- $10,000
- Per week
- $96.15
Before tax and any account fees.
A planning estimate. It assumes a steady contribution and a fixed rate of return.
How to read the result
Look at the weekly figure as well as the monthly one. Most people can judge whether they can find a number weekly far more accurately than monthly, and a plan that fails is usually one that was never weekly-affordable in the first place.
If the number is too high
- Extend the deadline. Time is usually the cheapest variable to change.
- Lower the goal, or split it into a first milestone you will actually hit.
- Increase income rather than cutting further — there is a floor to cutting, and no ceiling on earning.
Common questions
- Should I include a return rate?
- For a goal under about two years, leave it at zero. Money you need soon should not be somewhere it can fall in value, so assuming growth on it makes the plan look easier than it is.
