Total RPM is the number to compare across months — it separates "more traffic" from "better monetised traffic".
RPM and affiliate rates vary by niche, season and country of audience by an order of magnitude. Use your own measured figures as soon as you have them.
Why total RPM is the number to watch
Revenue per thousand pageviews folds ads and affiliate income into one figure that is comparable month to month regardless of traffic. If traffic grows and total RPM falls, the new traffic is worth less than the old — usually a sign of ranking for terms with no commercial intent.
Common mistakes
- Using a published RPM from another niche. Finance and software RPMs are many times higher than general-interest ones.
- Turning on ads too early. At low traffic they earn little and cost trust and page speed.
- Ignoring where the audience is. RPM varies enormously by country.
- Forgetting hosting, domain and tool costs when judging whether a site is profitable.
