Ad revenue is the most visible way a channel earns and usually the least significant. The useful output here is the reverse figure: how many views a target income requires, which is normally the number that resets expectations.

Ad revenue is usually the smallest income stream on a channel that earns well.

Ad revenue only. RPM varies enormously by topic, audience country and season, and this excludes sponsorships, memberships and affiliate income.

Why effective RPM is lower than quoted RPM

Quoted RPM applies to monetised views only. Once you spread the same revenue across every view, including those that never served an ad, the real figure is meaningfully lower — and it is the one that matters when planning against total views.

Common mistakes

  • Planning around ad revenue alone. Sponsorships, affiliate links and products usually earn more per view.
  • Using another creator’s RPM. Topic and audience country change it by several times over.
  • Assuming views are steady. Most channels earn unevenly, driven by a few videos.

Common questions

Does this include sponsorships or affiliate income?
No — ad revenue only. For most channels that earn a living, ads are a minority of total income.
