Every list leaks. That means a steady signup rate does not produce steady growth — it produces growth that slows and then stops at a predictable size. Knowing that size in advance is far more useful than a growth curve.

The ceiling is where churn cancels signups exactly. Growing past it needs more signups, not more time.

A projection with constant signups and churn. Real lists move in bursts.

The ceiling is the point

With constant signups and churn, a list converges on monthly signups divided by churn rate. At 150 signups a month and 2% churn that is 7,500 subscribers — and no amount of additional time gets past it. Doubling the list means doubling signups or halving churn; waiting does nothing.

Common mistakes

  • Measuring only gross signups. A list can grow on paper while shrinking in engaged readers.
  • Treating unsubscribes as failure. People who no longer want the email should leave; the alternative is worse deliverability.
  • Buying or importing lists. It raises the number and destroys both engagement and sender reputation.

Common questions

What churn rate is normal?
Roughly 1–3% a month for an engaged list, higher if signups come from sources with weak intent. Measure your own rather than assuming.
